BandRescue wants you to be safe on the road.  The ultimate set up would include a double axle trailer so that a blow out doesn't cause an accident.  Even with a double axle trailer you will need a tire once in a while.  The best case scenario is to have a spare tire already mounted on a wheel so your down time is kept to a minimum. The last thing you need is to be stranded on a busy highway or desolate 2 lane road.  This is not only dangerous, you might be late for your show!

We've done some research here that will hopefully assist you in locating a spare for your trailer and how to find out what size you need.....

Tire Construction

The first thing you need to learn is a little about tire construction.

Bias Ply

 trailerBiasTire

  • Poly or nylon cords crisscross the tire from bead to bead with the same number of ply at both tread to sidewalls providing stiffer sidewalls and more resistance to sway

Bias Belted

TrailerBiasBelted

  • Standard bias ply crisscross, bead to bead construction, but with additional belts under the tread

Radial

TrailerRadial

  • Radial plys run at right angles straight across the tire from bead to bead with belts (usually steel wire) under the tread.  This provides excellent traction, holding tread to road during swerving or turning.  These are very important features for controlling a car or truck, but the flexible sidewalls of this type of tire may aggravate trailer sway problems when this type of tire is installed on a trailer.

To sum up tire construction, automotive bias or radilal tires, with their more flexible sidewalls can accentuate trailer sway problems whereas the stiffer sidewalls of the ST (special trailer) bias ply tires help to control and reduce sway problems. Best trailer control will be achieved with ST tires.

Next, we will look at how to measure your hub to decide what bolt pattern you have on your trailer.

 How To Measure Your Hub

 The Results

5 Lug On 5" Bolt Circle

This is the standard 5 Lug Chevy/GM bolt pattern.  Due to the wide availability and economical price of these automotive rims, this bolt pattern is found on many trailer applications.

5 Lug On 4.5" Bolt Circle (4-1/2")

This is the standard 5 lug bolt pattern hub for the vast majority of  boat trailer hubs and rims.  It is also known as the small Ford bolt pattern and is used by some Cargo trailer manufacturers.

5 Lug On 4.75" Bolt Circle

Old Chrysler product and other very limited applications.  Probably not found on your trailer.

5 Lug on 5.5" Bolt Circle

Commonly referred to as the "big" Ford bolt pattern.  This rim size is found on many recent year Ford trucks but not likely on your trailer.
